Dark stepped out of the portal carrying Ember. Her blood was still flowing, running down the front of his tunic as he held her over his shoulder.
Those fools probably think I was trying to rescue her. This is going to be troublesome. I suppose I should keep her alive long enough to find out what I've gotten myself into.
Dark new little about first aid, but he understood that if she continued to bleed she would eventually die. Finding a warm room in the upper levels of the temple, he began to wrap a bandage around her.

Ember blearily opened her eyes and blinked as her vision started to clear, she then realised her unfamiliar surroundings. She was no longer in the tomb but in a strange room, she tried to dampen the natural panic and confusion which swept into her mind.
'What? How...How did I get here?'
Trying to sit up was a mistake, she put pressure on the wound that Dark was currently bandaging and gritted her teeth at the stab of pain but when she looked down instead of the gaping wound with scarlet, flowing blood there was a bandage being wrapped around her by a vaguely familiar pair of hands. Ember looked up at realised it was Dark.
"What are you doing?"

Dark flashed her a nasty grin hand held her down by the shoulder as he finished wrapping her wound. He didn't want her to misunderstand anything.
"Keeping you alive. I told you I didn't enjoy slaughtering the weak and wounded. You seemed ready to pass out without lifting a finger to resist, so I thought I would help heal you first. Besides...you seem to have pulled me into a very nasty business..."
The last sentence was spoken with a hint of irritation.

"Did I ask you to get involved?"
Was Ember's slightly cold reply as she stared at the wall, not looking at Dark, she was feeling very uncomfortable about being held down like this but none the less she remained still while he finished bandaging the wound. He had still saved her live...but she knew questions would follow about Giomanach, the Hunters and the Phantasms that seemed to have appeared out of the ether which she had no control over.
She didn't understand why he was getting irritated if he had just left her he would be in this situation but in the back of her mind Ember knew that if Dark had chosen to leave her she would have died.

Dark was pleased at her cold response. It meant that she knew he hadn't saved her out of the 'goodness of his heart'.
But why did I save her? Was it really just to kill her later.
Dark shook his head to clear the troublesome thoughts from his mind. He needed to be himself right now. Forcing his expression to remain menacing, he tilted his head to look her in the eyes.
"What's the matter? Is that how you show gratitude to someone that rescued you? No wonder trouble seems to follow you wherever you go."

The coldness in Ember's eyes faltered slightly as Dark mentioned that trouble followed her wherever she went, it was true, it did. She couldn't go into towns or cities without her heart pounding, the risk that she might have an attack in public which would make the Phantasms even stronger as they fed off fear and despair, changing form to suit people's worst nightmares. For a moment she was lost in thought and had dropped her gaze to the floor suddenly she remembered Dark and forced the harsh, icy cold look back into her emerald gaze but it seemed false.
"I've needed anyone to rescue me before."
That itself was a lie, Ember had barely escaped many confrontations with Giomanach and his Hunters, she had the scars to prove it...

Dark cocked an eyebrow at her, holding his grin. He leaned closer to her face, staring through her eyes and into her soul.
"Oh, so you didn't need rescuing, is that it? Then I deeply apologize for my interference. Shall I send you back to the graveyard in an effort to undo what trouble I have done?"

For a moment Ember held Dark's gaze, chilling her from bone to soul before she let it drop to the floor. He was getting a little too close for comfort which made her lean slightly to the side to create some space between them before sitting up. She gritted her teeth at the pressure on her injury but bore it as she got into a sitting position.
"Why did you help me then? So when I heal you have the satisfaction of killing me?"
Ever since she had become a Dreamscaper there seemed to be a never-ending stream of people after her blood, she clenched both hands into white knuckled fists at her side, she tried to hide that they were shaking.

Satisfied that he had scared her enough, Dark switched tactics. He stood up and backed away from Ember, leaning lazily against the wall and pulling his black cap down below his eyes.
"Who knows? Maybe I was just bored and wanted to try something new. Or maybe I just felt pity for you."
He chuckled grimly, as if at a clever joke.

Ember used to the wall to get albeit slightly shakily to her feet, she didn't respond to Dark's comment and instead stretching out her glistening, ebony black wings to see if there was any damage to them. They spanned at twelve feet across but apart from the muscles feeling tense from the hours of pulling pulled tightly to either side of her spine there was nothing wrong with them. Ember didn't have a clue where she was, this cold unfamiliar room with icy water dripping down the walls.
'Where the hell did he bring me?'
It occured to Ember that she didn't even know his name but after the way he had spoken to her she didn't feel inclined to start an introduction despite having saved her life from Giomanach. She briefly glanced over at Dark unsure of his intentions...why did he really bring her here?

Dark slid down the wall until he was sitting against it. The cool damp feeling in the air didn't bother him a bit. Dark was used to it, after all.
He heard the sounds of wings rustling and realized Ember had stood up. He didn't bother to react. He wasn't really tired, but his mind seemed a vortex of confusion. He sat their silently, eyes hid, and tried to sort his thoughts without thinking about them.

There was an awkward silence, the tension between them both was so thick is could have been sliced with Dark's sword. Ember felt a little chilled but there was very little she could do about that, she glanced over at Dark and realised with a deep sigh that she would have to accept that he had helped her, swallowing her pride Ember walked over to where Dark sat. Her footsteps echoing, every sound seemed to be amplified or maybe it was just the tense silence.
She stopped in front of his form and offered him her hand in the natural polite gesture.
"I guess I have to thank you for saving my life."

Dark whipped his head around and stared at her hand in surprise. There was no sarcasm in her voice and no deceit in her gesture. She was sincerely thanking him.Dark looked away, his mood irritated like a child that didn't get his way.
"I wasn't really saving you. That's not what I do. I just...I was only...don't get the wrong idea or anything..."
Dark twiddled his thumbs and kept his face turned away, refusing to look her in the eyes.

Strange...moments ago Ember couldn't bring herself to hold Dark's piercing gaze but now he refused to look her directly in the eyes. The fact that she was treating him without sarcasm or coldness made his reaction appear like such behaviour was foreign to him. This made him seem far less threatening and blood thirsty than the person she had come across in the tomb, he seemed almost human. Ember withdrew her hand but sat a small distance away from Dark, lost in her own thoughts for a moment.
"Well, even though you claim to be a shadow you must at least have a name?"
'Strange...'

Dark sat in silence for a long moment. True, he did have a name, but it wasn't really his. Like all other shadow people, he was simply a copy of someone. Even his name, Dark Link, reflected this. Still, a part of him wanted to answer her.
"I'm Dark..."
That was all he said. It was what he called himself. Even though every shadow was 'Dark someone', he liked the name as his own.
